Medical Students Will Now Spend 11 Years In University -NUC
Medical students in Nigeria have been mandated by the National Universities Commission to spend eleven years in the university.
According to the Punch, this mandate was made during the lecture “Development of Medical Education: Prospects and Challenges”, presented by Professor Chiedu Mafiana on behalf of the commission’s Executive Secretary Professor Julius Okojie at the maiden matriculation and inauguration of the University of Medical Science, Ondo State.
He explained that the first four years will be spent studying basic sciences in the university while the next seven years will be spent at the medical school. This, he maintained, would aid the students’ psychological growth and prepare them for the future.
The Governor of Ondo State Olusegun Mimiko was also in attendance and while expressing his optimism about the school, he stated that the university should make the most of the medical complex around the institution in conducting medical research.
He affirmed, “It is our hope and belief that it will provide sound scientific, technological and professional training to address identified health needs and problems, solve them within the context of community and national needs and sustainable development.”

The people proposing this policies are definitely first grade fools and don’t know shit about medical education. There is no where in the world where medicine is studied for 11years. The american system is a 4 year degree and then 4 years of medical school. In their medical school, they won’t do basic medical science because they would have done it at the degree level. For some one to say you will now do 4 year of basic medical science and then still do 7 years of medical school shows ignorance. So after 11years , if you have to do residency and specialise that means you will have to study for ever to be a specialist.
Hmmm. They are fools indeed! That means medical students will study forever!!!!!!
11 years..after graduating there wld stil be no employment…really this old ppl heading nigerian sectors shld be removed…they r too old..they really don’t think at all b4 they create policies..
No no no no!!!this is such a rubbish, are you kidding me or wah??u mean a solid eleven years?i’d rather prefer going to india to study medicine…what the hell are nuc doing for crying out loud?some are gonna turn to daddy while at school..thank my stars i did’nt listen to my parent and others telling me to go for medicine..when will it even begin its effect?…i just hope they don’t come up again with pharmacy being 7-8 years..
Mr Tim is this for only mbbs or d whole medical fields
Mbbs
It’s a load of bull, they don’t even know what they are saying, how is that supposed to work, students have enough time to mature psychologically during residency. They should instead look to improve the quality of training, upgrade the teaching methods to meet 21st century, change the orientation of the consultants who make students feel worthlessness during clinics, and provide more equipments. Also increase the spaces available for residency, when residency is enough to mould one psychologically, because you aren’t just learning you are actually learning, that’s why it’s called POSTGRADUATE TRAINING. 11 years kor 22 years ni, if they like let medicine be 22 years no amount of donkey years is enough to prepare you for the real thing.. That’s why it’s a life-long learning professional.. some people just wake up and make stupid rules without considering the ramifications. Mdcn can never allow it.
The person or group of persons that place that rule is really deranged!
Does it apply to dentistry?
Mr Tim does it apply to dentistry cos dey r mdcn
I don’t think so.
They must be mad
seriously, 11 years… the older generation of leaders have definitely lost it.
please do they allow bsc chemistry education to do direct entry for medicine or pharmacy
