There are 5 type of post graduate degree programs in Unilag. In this post I will list and explain in layman language what it means and which you should go for.
- MSc(Masters of Science) This is the academic masters programme. In most cases it usually requires at least 2nd class lower degree and above to be able to apply for these courses.
- Professional Masters(E.g MBA, MPA,) These are professional masters programme for people in the corporate work environment. Most professional masters accepts 3rd class degree and above for admission.
- Postgraduate Diploma(PGD) These are for people crossing from one faculty to another or people who wants to step up their class of degree usually a 3rd class to enable them go for their masters of science programme.
- Research Masters (MPhil) Usually for those that didn’t meet the requirements for PhD after their msc programme. In most cases they will be required to take an MPhil programme to be able to take up their PhD course.
- Doctorate Degree(PhD) For people in the academic field who are done with their msc programme and have the right requirements to proceed to doctorate level.
From the simple explanation above you can see that the lowest is PGD, The highest is PHD, The most common is MSc, The least common is MPhil and The most valuable by employers of Labour is the professional masters programme.

The best courses for experience candidates is the Professional masters,Difficult to pass entrance exams is the Msc
The professional masters also admits larger number of candiates yearly.

can an MBA holder go for PHD?
As explained above they would have to do an MPhil first because MBA is a professional masters programme not academics. So after an MBA if you intend to further to PhD then you have to take an MPhil first.
For those of us who has HND business administration and still want to upgrade ourselves are we to go for PGD or professional masters?
There are some professional masters you can apply for but not PGD. UNILAG does not accept HND for PGD Programme. As an HND holder you can apply for professional masters in Business admin, project management and biomedical engineering. You can message me on WhatsApp for further clarification
